Self-Regulation

Self-regulation is the ability to manage emotions, behavior, attention, and impulses in order to respond appropriately and reach goals. In early childhood, this may look like a child calming down after feeling upset, using deep breaths, waiting for a turn, following directions, keeping hands to themselves, or focusing during a classroom activity. During the preschool years, brain areas connected to self-control and emotional regulation are developing quickly, which makes this an important time for children to learn and practice these skills. Teachers play an important role by modeling calm behavior, using consistent routines, giving visual reminders, and creating a safe and supportive classroom environment. Strategies such as co-regulation, breathing exercises, structured play, and visual cues can help children learn how to control their feelings, actions, and attention in healthy ways.
